RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
